22/3/2001: The AMD Athlon reaches 1,33 GHz... without the nucleus Young pigeon
AMD has made use of the first day of the computer fair CeBIT of Hannover, Germany, to present two new models of his scale Athlon, one to 1,33 GHz with bus to 266 MHz and other to 1,3 GHz with bus to 200 MHz. His price is excellent: 350 $ and 318 $, respectively.
These mikes, according to tests presented by AMD and endorsed by some manufacturers of software like Ulead and Sonic Foundry, can go so far as to overcome Intel Pentium 4 of 1,5 GHz in the paragraphs in which this is more powerful, those of sound edition and video, especially using the new bus to 266 MHz and the memory DDR-SDRAM PC2100.
Like it was already known, in other more "classic" applications as the ofimáticas or the renderizado in 3DStudio Max the advantage of the Athlon is overwhelming, being in many of these programs 20 % (or even 40 %) more rapid than the Pentium 4.
Nevertheless, these two new mikes are still not equipped with the new nucleus Young pigeon, which waits that it will allow to the Athlon to reach even major speeds, reducing the high dissipation of heat of the current models with nucleus Thunderbird and allowing to AMD to compete on the portable market. In turn, the Young pigeon should be replaced at the beginning of 2002 with the nucleus Thoroughbred (yes, how it sounds) of 0,13 microns.
