23/3/2001: ATI tries to buy FireGL

Apparently the Canadian ATI would be interested in buying FireGL, a graphic division of SONICblue (the ancient one S3). ATI has already put on the table 10 million dollars, of which 2,7 millions would be in cash. With this measurement ATI he would try to penetrate on the graphic market for servants based so much on Windows NT/2000 as on Linux.
In the buy on the part of ATI all the contracts would survive with companies as important as Compaq, Dell, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Siemens. On the other hand, they do not also discard to adapt this technology for the market of computers of office, as affirms David Orton, president of ATI.
The current family of cards FireGL OpenGL is based on the API 3D and optimized for the use of programs as 3DStudio MAX or Softimage, as well as for the processors of Intel based on the instructions SSE or the AMD Athlon. Finally, positive news if it puts the most difficult things (or at least more equalled) to the almighty NVIDIA...

23/3/2001: Transmeta also signs up Linux

The big Linux advantage takes root neither in his price (it is free) nor in his quality (out of any doubt), but in that it is a question of free software, therefore any person can gain access to the code and modify it for his expediency (any user of Linux who has re-compiled the nucleus has already realized this action of "personalización"). In this respect, the microprocessors manufacturers consider it to be perfect for his new products (Intel and HP have already demonstrated it with the support to develop Linux for his new Itanium, and AMD for his Sledgehammer, both of 64 bits).
The last interested company of the sector is a Transmeta, which tries to turn his new distribution of Linux Midori into the standard operating system for portable devices (if possible, equipped with the processors Crusoe de Transmeta). Midori is compatible with the architecture x86 and she is not directed only to portable PCs, but it can be used in other mobile devices, like the panels of access to Internet.
The principal characteristics of this new operating system take root, in addition to talking each other of the whole system finished UNIX, in a major orientation towards an ideal consumption of electrical potency with a minimal use of memory. The project is endorsed by the reputation of Linus Torvalds, the creator of the original Linux, who works for Transmeta.

22/3/2001: The AMD Athlon reaches 1,33 GHz... without the nucleus Young pigeon

AMD has made use of the first day of the computer fair CeBIT of Hannover, Germany, to present two new models of his scale Athlon, one to 1,33 GHz with bus to 266 MHz and other to 1,3 GHz with bus to 200 MHz. His price is excellent: 350 $ and 318 $, respectively.
These mikes, according to tests presented by AMD and endorsed by some manufacturers of software like Ulead and Sonic Foundry, can go so far as to overcome Intel Pentium 4 of 1,5 GHz in the paragraphs in which this is more powerful, those of sound edition and video, especially using the new bus to 266 MHz and the memory DDR-SDRAM PC2100.
Like it was already known, in other more "classic" applications as the ofimáticas or the renderizado in 3DStudio Max the advantage of the Athlon is overwhelming, being in many of these programs 20 % (or even 40 %) more rapid than the Pentium 4.
Nevertheless, these two new mikes are still not equipped with the new nucleus Young pigeon, which waits that it will allow to the Athlon to reach even major speeds, reducing the high dissipation of heat of the current models with nucleus Thunderbird and allowing to AMD to compete on the portable market. In turn, the Young pigeon should be replaced at the beginning of 2002 with the nucleus Thoroughbred (yes, how it sounds) of 0,13 microns.

21/3/2001: Yamaha announces his new series of tape recorders CRW2200

Continuing to the series 2100 thrown in last October, Yamaha announces the availability of his new series of retape recorders of CD - ROM CRW2200. This new series is capable of recording CDs at a speed of 20x, that is to say, to 3 MB/s, with what approximately it is taken in recording a 650 MB CD less 4 minutes. Also it is capable of writing in CDs regrabables at a speed of 10x and of reading at a speed of 40x. Also it includes more than generous buffer of 8 MB memory .
There incorporates the novel system Partial CAV partially constant (angular speed) who assures a correct recording and from quality at diverse speeds. Also there incorporates the system SafeBurn (present in other marks, like the prestigious Plextor) that avoids the mistakes in the recording due to the saturation of the buffer of the tape recorder. If the buffer collapses, the tape recorder for and waits until the buffer should be again free, beginning to write in the point where it left it.
The beginning the first model in seeing the light will be the internal model ATAPI (IDE). In the middle of year there will turn out to be other models as the SCSI-3 (intern and day pupil), the Firewire (IEEE 1394) and the USB 2.0, these two last ones only external. A tape recorder that promises speed and stability. Although skylight, the competition is prepared to equal (or to overcome) soon his services...

20/3/2001: Mikes for portable: Pentium III to 1 GHz and Celeron to 750 MHz

Intel makes use of last moments of his sweet almost monopoly on the microprocessors market for portable PCs, announcing three new models: two Pentium III, to 1 GHz and 900 MHz, and a Celeron to 750 MHz.
Since it is habitual, two Pentium III incorporate the technology Intel SpeedStep, for which they limit his voltage to 1,35 V when they use the battery... in addition to working to enough less MHz, 700 MHz in case of the model of 1 GHz. In the opinion of this editor, to buy a portable rapid one to go more slowly when it is used of portable form is not anything very logical, but...
In any case, the prices of new Pentium III are exaggeratedly high: 722 $ and 562 $ respectively, buying at least 1.000 units. In comparison, the 750 MHz Celeron  seems to have an excellent relation quality / price to only 170 $, with a consumption not much major than that of his older brothers and a quite nearby yield, perhaps even top if others are in way of saving of energy.
Since it is habitual, all the manufacturers of portable will have models with these mikes of immediate form. It is convenient for Intel to make use of the moment, since in a few days the esperadísimos might announce new mikes AMD to themselves for portable...
