6/3/2001: ABIT presents a badge for AMD and DDR-SDRAM (and others for P4)

The new ABIT motherboard is called KG7-RAID and has excellent characteristics, in addition to the already mentioned support for DDR-SDRAM. The new motherboard uses a combination of already habitual chips, the AMD 761 as NorthBridge (he supports DDR-SDRAM with an excellent yield) and the Route 686B like SouthBridge (with advanced I/O characteristics, like ATA/100, at good price).
     AGP is provided with neither more nor less than 4 grooves DIMM for memory DDR-SDRAM (with a maximum of 4 GB, almost not at all), 2 ports USB (in addition to an extra channel for the installation of other 2), 4x and 6 grooves PCI, in addition to being able to install up to 8 devices ATA/100 (4 of them being able to work in the ways RAID 0, 1 ó 0+1).
    The overclockers can begin rubbing the hands, since with SoftMenu III they will be provided with , that the physical speed of the bus allows to fit from 100 to 200 MHz in increases of 1 MHz (what means that our AMD might work with a 400 MHz maximum bus ... a little on the other hand difficultly to reach in practice). Of course, we will arrange of monitoring of almost all the parameters hardware, like speed of rotation of the fans, voltages, temperature...
    Nevertheless, ABIT retires neither to Intel nor much less: it is preparing also the throwing of two badges for future Pentium 4 of 478 pines (review of the current one of 423 pines), one with support of memory Rambus (TH7-II) and other one of SDRAM (BL7-RAID). And later the DDR-SDRAM will come to the P4, undoubtedly...

6/2/2001: ALi takes the DDR to the portable ones

    From the hand of ALi and Trident the first chipset comes to the market for portable with support of memoirs DDR-SDRAM and SDRAM, checker of video CyberBlade integrated XP, and prepared for the new generation of processors Intel made with 0,13 micron s technology , especially destined for the portable market.
    The complex name of the criaturita is a CyberALADDiNT (successor of the CyberALADDiN and of the CyberMAGiK); the added "T" in the end is for Tualatin, 0,13 micron s Pentium III . According to his manufacturers this chipset will satisfy those users who need potency 3D in his small computers.
    Although, we do not deceive ourselves, it will not be a speed marvel in the graphic aspect, his DDR-SDRAM support will allow to 2,5 V to save battery with regard to the current solutions with SDRAM to 3,3 V... and of course it matters very much for the users of portable.

6/1/2001: Intel and ROUTE prepare the arrival of Pentium III Tualatin

    As it does echo The Inquirer to itself, the throwing of the successor of Pentium III is waited for June. In particular, the first models will go to 1,2 GHz and 1,13 GHz, with a few prices of 350 $ and 320 $ respectively. This new review of Pentium III (it is already the third one, after the nuclei Katmai and Coppermine) is known by the Tualatin by-name and his biggest contribution is that it is made by 0,13 micron s technology , what will allow him to reach with facility higher frequencies, together with a minor energy consumption.
    On the other hand, ROUTE is already preparing his chipsets to give support to Tualatin de Intel. More specifically, it the models will make Apollo Pro266T a ROUTE, ROUTE Apollo Pro133T, ROUTE ProSavage PL133T, and ROUTE Apollo PLE133T DDR/PC133. All of them support Pentium III, Celeron and processors C3 of ROUTE in format Socket 370.
    The Tualatin presents itself as an easy and necessary exit on the part of Intel to face to the superiority of the current Athlon (and even of the Duron) both in price and in services. Nevertheless, to pay 350 $ for a Tualatin to 1,2 GHz with bus 133 MHz Federal Security Service can turn out to be too expensive if for 180 $ we can obtain an Athlon to 1,33 GHz with 266 MHz bus . Only it happens to me that it could be a tastes question...

5/31/2001: ATI licenses his graphic chips to third

    ATI proves to be determined to extract the best thing of her itself. Test of it is his decision, as he has just announced officially, of licensing to third companies all his graphic chips. Until now, ATI was taking charge so much of the development and design of the chip as of the manufacture of the card that we could buy finally in the shops.
    Now it will keep on doing it, but also it will provide his graphic chips to third companies that are interested in making a card based on a chip of ATI. This itself does NVIDIA, although in his case only he takes charge of the development of the graphic chip and leaves the manufacture of the cards to other companies (Creative, Hercules, WinFast...).
    "The market has changed the sufficient thing into last year and a half, and it is already time that ATI deepens his presence between the integrators of teams and other distribution markets with this new strategy", points out David Orton, president of ATI.
    Magnificent news for all the users, since ATI will reverberate both in the price and in the variety of options, quality and finished end of the graphic cards with chips. Also it is undoubted that ATI will gain more money with this wise decision. Nevertheless, let's hope that it him should last more enough than to Apple when it took the same decision in 1996 to begin backwards one year later.
    Be as it is, it seems that the disappearance of 3dfx, between other things for problems of manufacture that perhaps it would not have had of collaborating with other companies as if it was doing NVIDIA, has taught to ATI the way to be continued.

5/30/2001: ATI presents the technology TRUFORM of his futures chips

    Since somewhere near the 80s the first engines were appearing 3D, with games as The Centinel for Spectrum, up to the most recent like Blade, the advance in the treatment 3D has been notable and more from the appearance of the cards 3D servants. The quality of the image 3D has increased greatly but at the cost of more powerful and expensive cards that can move the immense quantity of triangles that form every object. The golden rule has been "all the more triangles, more precise and real is the image".
    But skylight, this skill has the disadvantages of needing increasingly a graphic chip more powerful (GPU) to operate with the triangles, more memory to store them and major consumption of the breadth of memory. In this sense, ATI is thinking about having solved the problem with his newly presented new technology, TRUFORM (a true form acronym, real form).
    Basically this skill consists of using what ATI names N-Patches, that is to say: to draw, from a relatively scarce number of triangles, Bezier curves for the method of interpolation, which fit to the real curvature of the object; to divide then these "basic" triangles in smaller and better exact triangles to this real curvature, and to apply on them the textures and the lighting effects. This way, the realism and the quality each of the represented objects would increase greatly.
    Nevertheless, the real benefit is not so much the increase of the quality of image, since the same effect might be obtained by the "brute force" of the classic method (more "basic" triangles, "not truformeados"), but in the reduction of the necessary band of memory. To do an idea to us, a figure of high quality formed by 10.000 triangles to obtain approximately 60 fps would occupy 30 MB/s of the band. Using TRUFORM only it needs 1,2 MB/s, that is to say, 25 times less, because the band comes down practically to that of the scarce "basic" triangles (approximately 400 in this example). And all the calculations extra are on account of the graphic chip (of the graphic ATI chip, for more signs).
    TRUFORM is compatible with DirectX 8 and OpenGL and one hopes that the ATI RADEON 2 (available about September of this year) should be optimized for this skill. Also, it can be used in cards that do not support it: simply, renderizarán more or less basic triangles, with better or worse quality as his potency. Also, apparently, TRUFORM turns out to be easy to programme, what will influence decisively his use in the future games. Well for the ATI boys.

5/29/2001: Intel throws to the market his Itanium of 64 bits (finally!)

    After many years of plans and development, and not few of debts and changes, Intel has just announced the availability of his new microprocessor Itanium, the first one of 64 bits for the platform PC made by the Californian giant.
    His destination there are the servants and professional workstations, where until now the leaders of the market are Sun Microsystems, HP, Compaq and IBM. To enter on this market results from big importance for Intel, since the high prices of these devices allow to obtain economic benefits much major than on the hard-fought domestic market... especially since AMD threw his Athlon.
    The Itanium sells in 733 MHz models and 800 MHz, as well as with cache memory of third level of 2 ó 4 MB (although of the first level only 32 KB and of the second level 96 KB, a few rather scarce quantities). The nucleus of the chip, known as Favor, is made by 0,18 micron s technology and uses a bus of 2,1 GB/s to 266 MHz. The prices turn out to be "competitive" in relation to his market segment: between 1.177 $ and 4.227 $.
Undoubtedly, the new architecture IA-64 has many advantages with regard to the current mikes of 32 bits:
     - 64 bits = enormous memory addressability
       (physicist of 44 bits = up to 2 Terabytes = 2.048 GB = 2.097.152 MB);
     - excellent mathematical yield (floating comma);
     - massive parallelism (up to 20 operations for clock cycle); and
     - designed for configurations with 4, 8 ó more microprocessors.
But it has also some problems:
     - scarce speed in MHz;
     - discreet yield in "classic" operations (of points);
     - enormous energy consumption (up to 130 W!!); and
     - very bad yield in applications of 32 bits, since it must emulate them.
These small mistakes (or "commitments of design", as it looks) make to doubt some analysts if there will not be better to wait to the future microprocessors of 64 bits of AMD (the Hammer), with native support of 32 bits; or to use the new Pentium 4 Xeon, of 32 bits but rapids and "bargain sales" (406 $ the model to 1,7 GHz with bus of 3,2 GB/s and 256 KB of cache memory L2); or to hope to the future review of the Itanium, the McKinley, that it might solve many problems, especially when one makes of 0,13 microns. This "Itanium II" is waited for some moment of 2002.
    In any case, the true thing is that the Itanium is a reality today and that it has the declared manufacturers support like Dell, IBM and HP, as well as of Microsoft and the principal distributors of Linux... and that is not small. Welcome, Itanium.
