His publicity in CsH

11/12/2000: Microsoft presents DirectX 8

With clear conference to improve three points: the quality of image, the sound and the support for games multiplayer for Internet (with several tens or even hundreds of players), and with the idea of being the base for his future console X-BOX (whose subtitle says "Direct X Powered), Microsoft has presented the sixth official version (yes, some numbers "did not see the light") of his popular API for development of games and multimedia applications (for the final user, the controlers that allow to play in Windows).
In this occasion, the increase of yield obtained by any versions beta previous has not turned out to be reflected in the definitive version, which nevertheless seems quite elaborate and which is provided with progress in all the aspects of the API (principally and how we have already said, in the image quality).
The new version has had very good reception between the developers' community, and the first games optimized for her (like Mechwarrior 4) will not be late in appearing on the market. 11 MB of DirectX 8 in Spanish version (7 MB for Windows 2000) can unburden themselves free from Internet... if one is patient, clearly.

11/11/2000: IBM throws the monitor of major resolution of the world

Multinational IBM has never just thrown to the market the monitor for computer with the biggest reached resolution: 200 píxels for inch, what - assuming that has the same format as the normal screens for PC - is equivalent to be able to reach a top resolution to 3500x2500 píxels.
This screen 22 inches LCD is similar to those who equip the portable computers, although these normally are only capable of coming to 1280x1024 píxels, while the monitors classic CRT of good quality usually come to 1600x1200 píxels. IBM makes sure that it proves "so egg white as an original photo".
Although perhaps one day comes to the public "from consumption", obviously for the time being it will be assined to "professional" applications where the cost of this screen could be well-taken: engineering, desktop publishing, medicine... and military men, since the first client is the Department of Energy of the USA, which will use it for simulations in 3D of atomic weapon in his supercomputer ASCI White (also IBM, of course).

8/11/2000: Fujitsu throws to the market external hard disks of only 200 grams

The company Fujitsu shows us his new portable hard disks with connection USB. The capacities of these compact devices of storage are 10, 20 and 30 GB, with a few dimensions of 80 x 170 x 22 mm and a 200 grams approximate weight. This does that they are very useful like the second hard disk of a portable one or simply to transport information of a considerable volume.
The HandyDrive is conectable to any computer (PC or Apple) for his port USB, very interesting option, since it is possible to realize the connection "in warm", with the computer in march. It is necessary only to add the cable USB and the power cutoff point to him, being optional to derive the last one from the connector PS2 (it includes cable). Probably soon there will be a version for Firewire, even more rapid, although for the time being only the computers Apple use this connector.
The speed of these external devices is 7200 rpm, what guarantees a high yield. His price is about 50.000 ptas for the model of 10 GB and 120.000 ptas for that of 30 GB. Also, all the models incorporate a game of masks of colors that makes them easily distinguishable.

11/7/2000: Transmeta triumphs in the bag despite his problems

The share offer of actions of Transmeta (the company that makes the fashionable processor for portable, the Crusoe) has been the whole success. 13 million new actions sold at the double of the dear value (21 $ each one, neither more nor less than 273 millions of dollars). At the end of NASDAQ on Tuesday, the value of the shares of Transmeta was 45,25 $.
This takes place despite the announcements of IBM and Compaq of canceling for the time being his projects of portable based on the processor Crusoe. In case of IBM, one mentions in certain circles that they might use them in the future, but not right now for coming late to the Christmas sales campaign. The case of Compaq might be different, since it seems to have changed the Crusoe into the "sure bet" (and perhaps encouraged economically) of portable Pentium III of low consumption (although as down as that of the Crusoe).
Also, they might have influenced the results of the polemic tests of yield of the Crusoe, which due to the special nature of this mike do not reflect his real yield... but there are a bad advertizing argument. In any case, "they will keep on evaluating the Crusoe for the future".
Until now, "only" Sony, Fujitsu, Hitachi and NEC make portable with the Crusoe; big other, Toshiba, already announced that for the time being he was not thinking to use it. Despite these problems, Transmeta collaborates with AMD in other projects, thinks to promote the Crusoe on more markets... and he is supported to the expectation, conscious of that 273.000.000 $ allow to wait with certain calmness.

11/7/2000: The production of mikes 0,13 microns Intel will begin about 2001

Intel has just announced that it has finished the development of his technology of 0,13 microns manufacture; that is to say, of 130 nanómetros ó 0,00013 millimeters. This allows to make transistors of only 0,07 microns wide of door (according to Intel, 1000 times less than the thickness of a human hair... I have always wondered who chooses and measures the above mentioned hair).
This news implies that Intel will be able to make chips (microprocessors, memoirs...) more children, with major number of transistors, minor consumption and minor dissipation of heat. As comparative fact, the 0,25 microns recent step to 0,18 microns in the microprocessors has supposed close to 30 % less of consumption and 50 % less heat to be removed.
Thanks to this technology, Intel glides to continue the eternal career of the MHz (already Gigahertzios, and who knows if prompt Terahertzios) and to make memoirs of major capacity and minor consumption. According to Sunlin Chou of Intel, "this achievement reaffirms our confidence in the Law of Moore" (which indicates that the number of transistors that fit in a chip will be able to double every 18 months).
Nevertheless, the process will not be immediate: the manufacture with much more profitable 300 mm silicon waffles, which those 200 mm, will not be reached until the year 2002. AMD has some time still...

11/6/2000: NVIDIA and ATI endorse the new platform DDR of AMD

NVIDIA has just announced officially that his GPUs (Graphic Processing Units) that is to say, his chips Geforce, will be the first ones in supporting the new Athlon to 266 MHz of frontal bus (133x2 DDR) with the new chipset AMD-760. This chipset is provided with support for the new memoirs DDR-SDRAM (Double Data Rate-SDRAM).
It is already not any secret that AMD and NVIDIA are working very closely in the field of the technology 3D. Dan Vivoli, vice-president of marketing of NVIDIA, has said: "The processor Athlon and the chipset AMD-760 they will provide to us a platform where all the potency of our GPUs will break loose".
Undoubtedly, good news for the users of cards GeForce... that recurs of the hand of ATI and his graphic chip RADEON, since also the Canadian company makes sure that his products "are completely optimized" for the new mikes and chipset of AMD. According to ATI "AMD is satisfied of collaborating with ATI for the introduction of the technology DDR".
We do not know if both companies are right, but in any case they agree in something: they like AMD... while it bandages so much or more than Intel, skylight.
