11/7/2000: Transmeta triumphs in the bag despite his problems
The share offer of actions of Transmeta (the company that makes the fashionable processor for portable, the Crusoe) has been the whole success. 13 million new actions sold at the double of the dear value (21 $ each one, neither more nor less than 273 millions of dollars). At the end of NASDAQ on Tuesday, the value of the shares of Transmeta was 45,25 $.
This takes place despite the announcements of IBM and Compaq of canceling for the time being his projects of portable based on the processor Crusoe. In case of IBM, one mentions in certain circles that they might use them in the future, but not right now for coming late to the Christmas sales campaign. The case of Compaq might be different, since it seems to have changed the Crusoe into the "sure bet" (and perhaps encouraged economically) of portable Pentium III of low consumption (although as down as that of the Crusoe).
Also, they might have influenced the results of the polemic tests of yield of the Crusoe, which due to the special nature of this mike do not reflect his real yield... but there are a bad advertizing argument. In any case, "they will keep on evaluating the Crusoe for the future".
Until now, "only" Sony, Fujitsu, Hitachi and NEC make portable with the Crusoe; big other, Toshiba, already announced that for the time being he was not thinking to use it. Despite these problems, Transmeta collaborates with AMD in other projects, thinks to promote the Crusoe on more markets... and he is supported to the expectation, conscious of that 273.000.000 $ allow to wait with certain calmness.
