11/19/2000: Seagate pulverizes all the records: hard disk of: 180 GB!!

This week Seagate has presented his new hard disk Barracuda 180, where the number represents his enormous capacity: 180 GB, according to the manufacturer the biggest of the world and sufficient to store "a battery of documents of text as high as three times Empire State Building" (that is to say, 3 times 381 meters, if our information does not betray us).
The disc turns 7.200 rpm and uses the interface UltraSCSI 160, but despite this it is supported in a few moderate 10,3 watts and 37 decibels, being a quite silent hard disk inside his category. Also, it incorporates a special system to reduce the errors due to vibrations.
Initially the hard disk will have a recommended price of 2.195 $, what it places to him clearly on the market of professional applications, for example for edition of digital video. And although expensive, it looks like a sure investment: 5 years of guarantee and an average life time between mistakes (MTBF) of neither more nor less than 1.200.000 hours (that are 136 years... one wonders how they can be so sure).

11/18/2000: Also Apple supports to the platform DDR-SDRAM

According to publishes The Register, it seems that the Pentium 4 remains to alone with the memory Rambus. After the unconditional AMD support towards the platform DDR-SDRAM, also Apple has had in consideration the new standard of memory RAM.
His new models of Power Mac G4 finally will reach at the beginning of next year 600 MHz, after the problems that the company has had to overcome the barrier of 500 MHz... when AMD already has processors working to the speed double, 1.200 MHz (what, fortunately for Apple, does not mean by no means the yield double).
The principal innovation of this Power Mac takes root in that the new basic badges will have support of memory DDR-SDRAM, so much in models monoprocessor as in dual configurations. Certainly, already it stays less so that there appears the SPLENDID Mac OS X, the whole need to make use of the dual Power Mac.
And if this was small, Apple has already begun carrying the Mac OS X to the architecture PC. Perhaps be the commercial competition that the Windows 2000 needed ... or an attempt of there being prepared if they decide to leave the very powerful but difficult Motorola chips and to pass to Intel or AMD.

11/16/2000: Netscape throws the version 6 of his popular navigator

There is already available the final version of Netscape Navigator 6 after several months of waiting and three betas so that this navigator was going out to the light. The changes in this version are significant, starting by the big jump in the numeration of the same one, since one happens straight from the version 4.75 to 6.
Between his principal characteristics they stand out: the use of Topics (to personalize it, as the Winamp skins), which insurance will do the delights to more of one; there incorporates the AOL Instant Messenger (for chat meetings...); a new tool called "My Sidebar" to organize and to visualize parts of different web pages (a species of "Favorites + Channels", in language of Microsoft).
Also, the safety has been improved significantly, as well as the possibility of supporting the Java2 of Sun. But the most important change is the new engine "Gecko", which between other things undoubtedly will improve the navigation and files discharge. A curious note: after installing it, Netscape imports the "Favorites" of the Internet Explorer automatically. Regrettably, it is still not free in Spanish, but let's hope that it should be a question of a few weeks...
Meanwhile, Microsoft keeps on preparing his future Internet Explorer 6, while it has just thrown the first "Service Pack" for the IE 5.5 (neither available still in Spanish). It seems that the battle between Microsoft and Netscape has left the courts to go out to the network, where the users we will have the last word.

11/16/2000: On Monday, the 20th Intel will throw the Pentium 4 (probably...)

Paul Otellini, executive vice-president and general manager of the business group of architecture of Intel, has confirmed that the company is negotiating the licenses of the system bus of the Pentium 4 with other chipsets sellers. Intel glides to commercialize as soon as possible his last microprocessor in all the levels, something that according to his managers already will achieve in 2001, slightly less than one year if the
ZDNet rumor is true of that will throw it this next Monday.
At first, the computers based on the Pentium 4 will need the chipset i850 and memory RDRAM (Rambus), being the latter more expensive than other current technologies. According to the analysts, this will do that the global prices of the teams based on the Pentium 4 tend to the rise initially; a system with this technology would shoot his price over 2.200 $.
For this reason Intel is employed at another chipset of low cost (I named code Brookdale) who would support the current synchronous RAM (SDRAM PC133). The company plans also other chipsets for memory DDR-SDRAM, although a contract between Intel and Rambus would prevent from taking them to the practice during some time (and hence the agreements with other manufacturers). For the time being, Intel would reckon for a program of discounts and offers of basic badges with memory RDRAM.
On the other hand, the manufacturer of chipsets ROUTE has declared that it will develop its own chipset for Pentium 4, as it has realized them for the generation Pentium III... although Intel proves to be reticent to give them the necessary license. But the case is that ROUTE might give him the chipsets for DDR who needs...

11/15/2000: NVIDIA attacks again: piece of news GeForce2 Go, the first GPU for portable

The sale of portable has increased recently due to the descent of prices that has experienced this sector (although I always doubt if they sell more and lower the prices, or if, on having lowered the prices, they sell more..., we go, the problem of the egg and of the hen), and that is evident in that the manufacturers get overturned in the development of new and more powerful products for this market, considered already the second one behind the dessert PCs.
We surprised ATI some time ago with his already veteran ATI RAGE MOBILITY 128, who was counting with support AGP 2X, acceleration 2D/3D, DVDs reproduction without need for additional hardware and possibility of connection to diverse types of monitors and TV sets between other characteristics. For months this has been the graphic chip for portable more powerful...
Now it is the NVIDIA shift with his new "creature": the GeForce2 Go, which is provided, like his sisters (the GeForce256 SDRAM and DDR and GeForce2 MX and GTS), with its own GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), which is the unit entrusted to liberate to the central processor of the tedious calculations matématicos that implies any image 3D. Thanks to his architecture it is capable of processing more than 17 million triangles for second and 286 million píxels for second, all this with more than acceptable band of memory of 2,6 GB / century
If all this was not sufficient, also it includes even 32MB of memory DDR-SDRAM, what turns him also into the first graphic chip for portable that has this type of memory. It incorporates acceleration MPEG-2 and reproduction DVD, as well as the systems NSR (NVIDIA Shading Rasterizer), which provides effects of shades and lighting for pixel, and the DVC (Digitalis Vibrance Control) that increases the clarity and definition of the image. Also, his design avoids to sacrifice the life of the battery.
Finally, to use his games 3D favorites in a portable one with your own GPU and memory of video DDR has already stopped being a sleep.

11/14/2000: Intel prepares his future while it supports the Celeron in the past

Intel, still the number one of the market of microprocessors for PC, has just demonstrated that it is capable simultaneously of the best thing... and of the worst thing. The same day in which he has announced new developments software for his future mikes Pentium 4 and Itanium, has presented two new Celeron with a more proper speed of bus of other epochs.
The good news the new code compilers are a source for C/C ++ and Fortran, which are optimized for the already next Pentium 4 and include a preliminary version for the one that will be the first processor Intel of 64 bits, the Itanium. They facilitate the applications programming for PCs multiprocessor, they are compatible with Visual Microsoft C ++ and the only one "but" it is his price: 499 $ and 599 $ in version CD - ROM.
Another face of the currency is in the throwing of two new microprocessors Celeron, to 733 and 766 MHz; normally it would be good news, but the problem is in that these two mikes keep on working with a speed of 66 MHz bus , or what is the same: 11 and 11,5 times more rapid internally that externally, what generates an important "neck of bottle" for the information.
This turns out to be incomprehensible if it is not because of marketing, since it would not turn out to be by no means difficult to make them for a 100 MHz bus , or enclosed of 133 MHz like Pentium III. While AMD presents mikes with 266 MHz bus and has a processor "of consumption" with 200 MHz bus , Intel supports the Celeron with a speed of bus that was inaugurated by the original Pentium in 1994... practically in another century.

11/13/2000: Lacking in production capacity in the AMD factories

Such is the success of the new processors of AMD that seems that there will sell EACH AND EVERYONE of the processors that make up to Christmas. This shows two things up: on the one hand the big success of sales both of the Athlon and of the Duron, and on the other hand, the absence of capacity of the two only plants of production of AMD (Austin - Texas - and Dresden - Germany-).
But if it was not finishing here the thing, soon a new ROUTE chipset will appear with audio and integrated video, in the style of the ROUTE ProSavage PM133 but for processors AMD instead of Intel. This an unnecessary push would suppose a push to the sales of teams of low cost mounted with our darling Duron..., if they do not manage to make any more mikes.
On the other hand, we wait for some track on the date of issue of the new processors of AMD, destined to compete with the Pentium 4, the acquaintances as Young pigeon (earlier called Corvette, will substitute the Athlon) and Morgan (or Camaro, will substitute the Duron). Certainly, it seems that Morgan will be the first version for portable of the family Athlon.
Very much they will have to strain in AMD before the almost imminent starting of the 0,13 micron s technology in the factories of Intel (with the consequent fall of prices and increase of MHz)...
