1/30/2001: Intel throws two new mikes of very low consumption
Intel presents two new microprocessors to 500 MHz, a Pentium III and a Celeron, destined to satisfy the requirements of the market of portable. According to Frank Spindler, the director of the section of portable of Intel, it talks each other of "the mikes with minor consumption never constructed". Also he says, in an optimism boasting, that Pentium III to 600 MHz "will be at least two or three times more rapid than the Transmeta" (if he says it...). And the fact is that Transmeta, which with his series of processors Crusoe (of up to 700 MHz), has demonstrated that the potency and the yield are compatible with a bajísimo consumption.
The new model of Pentium III consumes only 0,5 W (in way of saving of battery, eye), while the previous models were consuming about 1 W, being located on five o'clock of operation capacity. It has incorporated the well-known system SpeedStep that reduces the speed of the mike as the battery uses or not. This way, Pentium III connected to the electrical network works 500 MHz, while using the battery it works to only 300 MHz (in whose case lowers his yield... we do not know if Spindler bears this in mind).
The Celeron does not incorporate this system. Nevertheless, both incorporate the QuickStart, which reduces the consumption during the breaks that happen in operations like the continued use of the keyboard. The first models will go out made of 0,18 micron s technology then to pass those 0,13 micron s with copper interconnections.
Intel this way diminishes the energy requests of his mikes for portable that helps to lengthen the duration of the battery and to improve the productivity of the user. Nice words, undoubtedly, but: perhaps more advertizing than real? The truth will triumph, be which is...
