2/18/2001: ALi will make chipsets for Pentium 4

    Acer Laboratories Inc. (ALi) has signed an agreement with Intel that will allow them the chipsets manufacture for the last processor of Intel, the Pentium 4. This way there is reaffirmed the continuity of ALi's commitment with Intel, since it comes to extend the agreement for which the Taiwanese company has made chipsets for Pentium II and Pentium III.
    Very probably ALi's chipsets for Pentium 4 will support memory DDR-SDRAM, what would allow to Intel to extend the possibilities of his microprocessor without having to face legally Rambus, with which he committed himself to that his chipsets for Pentium 4 would use only the memory RDRAM of Rambus.
    At the same time, Intel balances the chipsets market, on having granted this license to a direct ROUTE competitor. Until now, Intel only had authorized to make these chipsets to ATI... perhaps to avoid judgments for monopoly, since the presence of ATI in this sector is almost anecdotal.

2/17/2001: Big acceptance on the part of the industry to the LDT of AMD

    AMD has just re-baptized with the trade name of HyperTransport his new technology known until now like LDT (Lightning Data Transport); independently of his name, one hopes that it will allow to increase greatly the connection speed between chips. Some companies that have already declared his intention of using the new technology of AMD are a Broadcom Corporation, Slack Systems, NVIDIA, ATI or Sun Microsystems, between others.
    The new AMD technology allows transference valuations with peaks of 6,4 GB per second, up to 24 times superior to the current systems. In the beginning it was thought principally to accelerate the internal communication between the chips of the chipset of computers of high yield and servants; nevertheless, his flexibility makes her ideal for all kinds of devices, as there can be devices of communications, networks, and even out of the field of the PCs.
    It seems that API NetWorks will be one of the companies first in being provided with products based on LDT (HyperTransport), principally for his narrow collaboration with AMD; it is for all well-known that both companies share enough technologies, like the bus of the processors AMD Athlon and Duron, the EV6, which had his premiere in the machines with microprocessors Alpha of API NetWorks.

2/16/2001: The Xbox of Microsoft: pure NVIDIA heart

    NVIDIA has announced the availability for his immediate manufacture (that runs in charge of the Taiwanese giant TSMC) of two multimedia microprocessors of the future console of video games of Microsoft, the Xbox. It is a question of the XGPU (Xbox Graphics Processing Unit) and of the XMCP (Xbox Media Communications Processor).
    The first one of them, the XGPU, takes charge of all the three-dimensional graphic operations. It is completely programmable, it will reach some: 125 million triángulos/s!! and it will be made by a 0,15 microns process.     The second one, the XMCP, is formed by two powerful mikes DSP capable of reaching 4 trillion operations per second. The first one of them would take charge of the digital prosecution of sound 3D of up to 64 voices, each of them with his respective three-dimensional position. The second one of the DSP would be in charge of managing the control of E/S and the games in network.
    We still have not seen yield tests, but with this panorama the Xbox it will reproduce DVDs, will have functions of digital video and it will be even more powerful than a GeForce3, all this for not much more than half of the price of a card for PC with the chip NV20. Onlooker, truth? Perhaps Microsoft trusts entirely that thanks to NVIDIA and the CPU of Intel, "his" console will be able to do shade to the almighty one PS2 of Sony. The "console of Microsoft", but Microsoft will not have done big part of his hardware...: in what sense will it affect that to his quality?

2/15/2001: The memory low SDRAM up to ridiculous prices

    The big stocks accumulated by the manufacturers of memory during the last months have provoked that the price of the chips of SDRAM lowers even less than half of what they were costing one year ago, being located in approximately 5 $ every chip PC133 of 128 Mbits (8 of which form a module of 128 MBytes).
    It is strong and continued descent is provoking that they could find modules PC133 of 64 MBytes for less than 25 $, and of 128 MBytes for approximately 40 $. Even modules of mark of exceptional quality, like them

2/13/2001: The NVIDIA GeForce3 is on having fallen down

    The future graphic chip NV20 of NVIDIA already has trade name: GeForce3.
