Jumpers to form part of the parameters of the mike

7. - Form the motherboard for the new microprocessor.

An interesting step: in enough modern basic badges it can be absolutely unnecessary, since they will detect automatically all the parameters of the mike (bus speed, multiplier and voltages) and will realize the necessary changes. Nevertheless, in other models it will be essential to realize the configuration to hand.

3 typical methods to form the motherboard for the new micro sound:

  • by means of jumpers: typical of the most ancient basic badges, like the equipped ones with socket Socket 7 or Slot 1. Generally it will have to form to hand all the parameters, placing in one or another position said jumpers; if you have not the manual of the motherboard, perhaps be able to do it following the indications serigrafiadas on the proper badge... if they are.

    Switches DIP to form the parameters of the mike
  • by means of switches DIP (DIP switches): a similar system to the previous one, but slightly more comfortable (at least it will not be able to lose the minuscule hood of the jumper). Normally in more modern basic badges, which perhaps form automatically some of the parameters, like the voltage.

    Configuration of a mike by means of the BIOS
  • by means of the BIOS (or another software): the most modern, proper system of the basic badges called jumperless (that is to say, without jumpers). These badges usually form the mike automatically, but they offer options so that the user realizes to hand the adjustments that there considers to be necessary... for example to realize overclocking. In quite ancient computers or portable some, it is possible that the configuration is realized by means of an external program instead of the BIOS, but it is something slightly habitual.

Of course, any combination of the previous methods is possible; the presence is very common, for example, of jumpers or switches DIP whose use deactivates any configuration for defect realized by means of the BIOS.

 

8. - Check everything, connect the team, cross the fingers and...

Make sure VERY WELL that did everything correctly: Does the mike do good contact? Is the fan connected? Did it form well the motherboard? If the configuration is realized to hand, pay special attention to the values of the voltage and the bus, do not be that it fries the mike; the multiplier often will be blocked of factory, although if it is not like that being wrong will be also very dangerous.

Certainly: do not close the team up to verifying that the fan works. One of the most common problems in a PC is that the death of the mike gives birth to the fan of the mike, sometimes after a few minutes of functioning, what will cause instability and even for superheat...

After starting, it should see the screen with the messages of the POST (that is to say, that of starter and cross-check of the parameters of the team and the BIOS), where the presence of the new mike should be identified. In many cases one will ask him to accept the changes by means of the pulsation of some key, or between and to go out of the BIOS so that they are accepted.

It can happen that the team works perfectly, but a Pentium II detects incorrectly the name of the mike (sometimes assigning one to him without any relation, like "486 to 600 MHz" for everything ); if it is only the name, NOTHING HAPPENS... but just in case, check everything and verify that the mike works at the speed that has to with such programs like the WCPUID of H.Oda!.

ATTENTION: if the team does not light, or it expresses whistles non-stop: EXTINGUISH QUICKLY!! It can be that the mike is not introduced completely in his connector (typical of the mikes for Slot A or Slot 1), that his configuration is incorrect or that it is not compatible with the motherboard. In any case, it will have to check EVERYTHING from the beginning: to burn a mike or to create a short circuit in the motherboard is not anything very difficult, I insure it myself.

Finally, bear in mind that sometimes a BIOS update is needed (previously to the installation of the new mike) so that the computer works correctly, for example (although not always) on having put a mike with MMX in a badge who was not supposed prepared for it, or a Celeron Mendocino in one of the first badges for Pentium II. In such a case, go to the web site of the manufacturer of the badge, unload the update and install it.

If it does not find the above mentioned update, it is possible that it is impossible to install the mike to him, although the voltages and speeds are correct; that's why it is always advisable to buy badges of mark, which are the only whose BIOS is updated... although as often as it would be desirable.

 

Annexes: some concrete cases

Following the previous explanations and with little care, it is possible to install almost any microprocessor. Anyway, we are going to specify a little for the case of a few types of mike, peculiar especially for being something ancient (although it looks like a lie, earlier to install a mike was not so simple as now):
