Our GeForce is fantastic, it can do a heap of things, now let's see if there is worth it with regard to a TNT2 Ultra (the most rapid until now, with pardon of 3Dfx).

First of all, we will have to clarify that, to make use of the technology T&L, the games will have to be programmed specially for DirectX 7 or, in his defect, in OpenGL, since if not the card will not be able to make use of his marvelous functions. At the moment there is practically no game that makes use of the new characteristics of DirectX 7, although soon they will be, nevertheless the fan of qualifications that work with the bookstore OpenGL yes is quite wide.

From the results of one of the games programmed in OpenGL more used to measure the yields, as it is "Quake III: Sand", it is possible to conclude that so much the TNT2 Ultra as the GeForce is a few marvelous cards, the increase (of the GeForce with regard to his small sister) is located between 10 and 25 frames per second, always depending on the resolution to which we are working (using Intel processors). Nevertheless, the really interesting thing is that there are occasions in which the speed will be the same with a "simple" Celeron 466 that with a Pentium III to 550 MHz, already is with a GeForce or with a TNT2 Ultra. This is because in any games the CPU it is not capable of sending enough information to our accelerating graph, and that that is supposed that the GeForce should unload it of work. The curious thing is that the phenomenon recurs with the same resolution independently of the model of accelerating (TNT2 Ultra or GeForce), what happens practically from the resolution of 1024*768 points.

But all this was with programs written in OpenGL. For the time being there is practically no game written in DirectX 7, so the games for current DirectX have no support for the characteristics of the GeForce. For it, the yield increase is quite small in games current DirectX, unless the sufficiently rapid thing one has a mike to make use to the maximum of the difference (we speak about mikes over 600 MHz).

If we are before mikes like that of powerful, it is possible that we notice a certain yield increase in cards with memory DDR-SDRAM; we might obtain an increase of between 2 and 5 frames with regard to the versions with normal SDRAM, coming even to approximately 15 frames from progress in the biggest resolutions and in the most demanding conditions.


Will it triumph T&L?

We believe that undoubtedly, at least whenever it receives the support that there have promised him the manufacturers of games (it already has that of Microsoft and his DirectX, at least). And if definitely ATI and S3 (with his Savage 2000) they join the car, it is almost sure that yes. The truth is that to increase the quality of the programs it is necessary that there are more polygons on screen, and it is good that someone has decided to attack this problem.

Despite the small disadvantages on that we have commented, the numbers show that we are before the most rapid accelerating graph of the market, for the time being... but unfortunately also the most expensive, more than 40.000 ptas (a little more still for the cards that take memory DDR, which certainly they are the most advisable).

Anyway, by the end of this spring one waits for a progress in the current model of the GeForce (the chip NV15), which will be a simple putting a day, with major speed of processor and memory; the principal advantage of this chip will be that it will make lower the prices of the current ones, what perhaps decides the programmers to support the technology T&L. Meanwhile, perhaps the best thing is to wait or to buy a TNT2 Ultra, which have a very accessible price and a magnificent yield.

And about the autumn 2000, the following version (NV20) with many innovations... This not for NEVER!!
