As we were saying, this article does not try only to evaluate if the ABIT SE6 is a good badge, but to face the most used chipsets of last times, to see if truly i815E he supposes an advance. Chipset ROUTE Apollo Pro 133rd

We have chosen two competitors: the supersuccessful chipset Intel BX (represented by the excellent ABIT BE6-II) and the ROUTE Apollo Pro 133 (represented by the ABIT VA6).

The first one is probably the biggest success of Intel on the chipsets market: of excellent yield and characteristics, only it has the problem of having no divisor 1/2 for the AGP, so that with mikes with 133 MHz bus the card AGP works (or not) overclockeada to 89 MHz, instead of 66 official MHz.

As for the ROUTE Apollo Pro 133, in his 133rd version is probably the chipset most sold at present. 133rd only it differs from 133 in the AGP support 4x instead of 2x, which in practice daily turns out to be completely indistinguishable.

Intel 820 has not chosen any badge with chipset for three motives:

  1. i820 only it gives good results to the maximum with the most expensive memory Rambus-DRAM PC800, which is out of the scope of most of users;
  2. enclosed Intel admits that with memory SDRAM the yield of the badges i820 is quite low;
  3. Intel has withdrawn (and stopped making for the time being) you tackle i820 with memory SDRAM for problems of functioning.
Undoubtedly it is a debatable decision, like all... but seen the previous thing we believe that it is most logical thing. Chip TNT2 Ultra

3 one has tried to support the same conditions for chipsets: the same manufacturer of the motherboard, the same hardware (Pentium III 733, 128 MB PC133, TNT2 Ultra to 175/183 MHz) and the same controlers (except those of the proper chipset, skylight).

In the ABIT SE6 the tests have been realized so much with the internal graphic checker of the chipset i815E as with the card TNT2 Ultra... and as they will see, the difference is more than notable. Certainly, to disconnect the internal checker does not need any more that to connect the external graphic card to the groove AGP, it is necessary to get neither in the BIOS nor anything similar.

 

Yield ofimático and professional

First we have compared the yield of three chipsets (that is to say, of three basic badges) in typical applications of office computerization (processors of text, spreadsheets, navigation for Internet...). For it, nothing better than the Winstone 99 Business, with his more than hundred megabytes of tests in Microsoft Office, Lotus SmartSuite, Corel WordPerfect and Netscape Navigator:

Since it can turn, thanks to the chipset i815E the ABIT SE6 proves up to 6 % more rapid than the badge BX, although this one talks each other of a platform with overclocking of the bus AGP (for talking each other of a mike with 133 MHz bus ). This happens if we use the card TNT2 Ultra; with the internal checker the yield lowers 11 %, but despite this only ROUTE remains 3 % below the badge.

This result is frankly exceptional (sincerely, better than we were waiting for ourselves), and it demonstrates that really Intel has realized some progress in the design of i815E. The integrated checker has worked sufficiently well, possibly helped by the fact of working with 24 color bits instead of 32 bits like the TNT2 Ultra, a difference that in an environment ofimático does not have the minor importance (does anybody realize documents in Word with more than 16.777.216 colors?).

To complete it is separated, we have realized an analysis of the band of available memory with every chipset by means of the program SiSoft Sandra 2000... and the truth is that we do not trust very much in the obtained results:

They seem too low, if it is supposed that a Celeron 600 in badge BX obtains 235/263 MB/s...: some problem of this version of Sandra, perhaps? In any case, and comparing with the examples offered by Sandra, it seems to remain clear that i815E is a good option for professional applications (that are those who need wide of memory high places)... whenever we do not use the integrated graphic checker, skylight.
